Around £3000 for Dorset Charities from Masonic Bowls Competition!

On a sunny August morning at Dorchester Bowling Club, the Dorset Masonic Sports Association was both privileged and honoured to have been selected to host the inter Provincial MACE (Masonic Annual Charity Event) Bowls Competition as part of our Tercentenary celebrations.

The event nominated three charities to support namely, Julia's House, the Victoria School for Disabled Children and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. With sponsorship from various lodges, businesses and raffles on the day, a total figure of around £3000 was collected and will be presented to these very worthwhile organisations.

Officially opened by the Provincial Grand Master for Dorset, Richard Merritt, 24 teams consisting of 96 members representing 16 Provinces from all over the UK competed in a closely fought and thoroughly enjoyable series of ends during the day culminating in the team from Metropolitan Grand Lodge being declared overall winners for the second time.

The Dorset Team consisting of Graham Mould, Alistair Swadel, Dominic Yeadon and Charlie Graham had a great day, reaching the play offs where they were beaten into a very creditable 4th place. To them we offer our hearty congratulations.

As well as support for our own team coming from the PGM, DPGM and Grand Superintendent, Graham Glazier, other eminent supporters for other teams included Ian Kingsbury, Provincial Grand Master for Devon, Roger Croome, PProGM for Middlesex and IChris Moore, Provincial Grand Master for Sussex.

Grateful thanks must also go to our organising committee of John Williams, Tony Hutley, Andy Preston, Andy Mackie and Mike Sykes who have worked tirelessly for well over a year to ensure this was a resounding success and to Sue Maggs, the secretary of Dorchester Bowls Club, and her team for the first class service and organisation we received all day.
