On Sunday 28th August at 15:00 the Lyme Regis Gig club held a launching ceremony on the harbor slipway for two of their latest vessels. One Cornish Pilot Gig named Prospero and a Cornish Sea Skiff named Storm Force. A few months earlier W Bro Andrew Vernon had proposed that the Lodge donate £1000 for the sea skiff building project. All the Brethren agreed that it would be a great project to assist, as it would benefit families in the local area.
The boats were traditionally named with Champagne poured over the bows by the Lyme Regis Mayor Cllr Owen Lovell and afterwards blessed by Rev. Keith Vivian.
The fiberglass skiff Storm Force will join her wooden half sister Gale Force, both boats are fast and light, which makes them idea for families and young people to learn to row and to become highly proficient members of Lyme Regis Gig Club's competitive crews. Cornish sea skiffs are fifteen feet in length and can be rowed by one person using two paddles (sometimes called sculls), by a crew of two with an oar apiece or three with paddles and oars.
Storm Force has been made possible through the generous support of The Montagu Lodge No 665, Candles on the Cobb and Lyme Regis Regatta & Carnival.
