Ferndown Lodge Support the Cleft Palate Charity

One of the charities chosen this year by Ian Spiers of Ferndown Lodge was the Cleft Lip Palate, based at Salisbury District Hospital Odstock. The Worshipful Master Vic Plowman, accompanied by Tom Courtney, were invited to present a cheque for the total of £500 pounds donated by the Lodge.

They were introduced to the team members, who are tasked with the job of caring for children afflicted with this terrible defect. Cleft palate is formed in the womb and can take up to fifteen to twenty years of constant operations to enable the child to live somewhere near a normal life.

They were informed that one in seven hundred babies are born every year in the UK with Cleft Lip, Cleft Lip Palate, or both. This Hospital provides services for an area from Lyme Regis through Dorset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire. Their specialist service covers most of the south of England, which has a population of eleven million.

This Charity needs all the help it can get, as last year for just one piece of equipment, they had to raise over two million pounds and with constant operations being formed on a weekly basis, new equipment is always required - at the moment with people's hard work and generosity they are just about coping.
